Description
Dong Xue Hua’s factory model for the majority of the beginning Xiao players actually are decent sounding and easy to play compared to most other Xiaos in this range. Using only properly dried black bamboo (or violet bamboo, a direct translation from the Chinese), its tones are even and robust. Going 2 octaves and a fifth without any issues, most xiaos of this calibre would be quite sufficient for the performers of small ensembles.
On the down side, the slightly narrow bore of the xiao accounts for its ease of play, but also causes it to sound rather thin if not amplified. Its bass notes are easy to play but lacks the depth required of complex, emotive xiao pieces. This is made up for in part, by the skilled crafting of the notch, which ensures performers of the ease of play.
Overall, for its price, its an ideal choice for a beginner.
