Description
We are performers too, and we know the frustration of a performer when he realizes that a piece he likes so much cannot be played because the original range of a Hulusi is only a Ninth at best. We added the High 7 and High 1 (that’s 1 with a dot on top for jianpu readers) so that we can play our favorite music pieces. Another complaint is the the 4 is always sheepish sounding or weak sounding. We added an additional key for the thumb, to alleviate this issue. All in all, we found the solution to solve the issues of Hulusi Musicians. Because we are musicians too! Hulusi – arguably the easiest instrument in Chinese Music, intrigues many people. A few simple notes, and yet the charm of the drone and the tone is unmistakable.
By using denser materials for the gourd, the resistance to pressure is greater, and hence, one is able to greatly increase the dynamic range of the instrument. The scented rosewood is a highly effective material to use when making the instrument, as it is readily available from countries near Yunnan. Using the same grade of wood as that for pipa, the clear notes of the hulusi is unmistakeable.
