Description
A considerably new wood for Erhu with very good results. Learning from western counterparts, who used the E.African Blackwood for oboes, clarinets and bassoons, Erhu makers use it for the same reasons. This dense (1.09kg/dm3) wood holds high frequency pitches very well, resulting in an erhu that is versatile in performing highly virtuositic music.
The Zhonghu is tuned a Fifth lower than the standard erhu, and is considered the “viola” section of the Chinese Orchestra Strings. It needs to sound robust enough to carry its “weight” and given modern compositions having greater emphasis on lower strings, the modern Chinese Orchestra needs Zhonghus they can depend on. The Zhonghu needs also to be clear and using Black Sandalwood, we feel this is an excellent choice for the orchestra.
