By using denser materials for the gourd, the resistance to pressure is greater, and hence, one is able to greatly increase the dynamic range of the instrument. The scented rosewood is a highly effective material to use when making the instrument, as it is readily available from countries near Yunnan. Using the same grade of wood as that for pipa, the clear notes of the hulusi is unmistakeable.

Critics of this feel that the tone is not “natural” but it is widely wised for recording and performances due to its ease of use and control in dynamics.
