The good news is that ruan tuning is straightforward once you know your instrument’s size, its intended tuning, and how to bring each string up to pitch gradually. The details matter, though. Pulling a string too quickly or using the wrong octave can create unnecessary tension and, in some cases, a broken string.

Start With the Right Tuning for Your Ruan

The ruan family includes several sizes, and they do not all use the same register. Before turning a peg, identify whether you have a xiaoruan, zhongruan, daruan, or another member of the family. Your string gauge and the music you are playing should support the tuning you choose.

For many zhongruans, the common standard tuning from the lowest-pitched string to the highest is G-D-G-D. In scientific pitch notation, this is often written as G2-D3-G3-D4. Modern geared pegs are generally easier to adjust, but they still benefit from small, deliberate movements.

Tune the remaining strings one at a time. For a standard zhongruan, work from G2 to D3, then G3 and D4. After all four strings reach their target notes, return to the first string and check again. A clean interval sounds calm and centered. If you hear a pronounced wavering or beating effect, one of the strings may be slightly off. Use the tuner for confirmation, then make a tiny adjustment.
